This Oakville home’s central space has the open modern staircase as a main focal point, backed by marble panels that create a luxurious look in an understated, elegant way. The staircase materials extend this feeling into the third dimension with solid oak treads, stainless hardware, and glass railings. assembled and installed to exacting standards.
The stairs and stringers for this project were prefab, made by Kenedy Stairs in their nearby Hamilton manufacturing facilities, which helped speed up installation and control costs, while delivering the needed precision. The stainless steel hardware from Euro Architectural offers contrast to the dark treads and helped bring everything together in a way where quality was apparent even at the closest inspection.
“It’s very important to make the glass panels line up with the panel of the next stair, as any imperfection is very noticeable when installing modern stairs,” John explains. “We always make plywood templates of the panels first in order to ensure perfect fit and alignment. Then we get our glass parts from Accura, who give us great service and excellent product, time after time.”
The house blueprints, from Keystone Home Designs by Gerardo Castillo, called for the stairs to have a 180-degree turn with a landing at the midpoint between floor and ceiling. John comments: “There’s a lot to like about this configuration. It creates visually pleasing symmetries, and, particularly in high ceiling spaces, gives people a often welcome break when climbing the stairs, making the home more comfortable for a wider variety of occupants with different levels of activity or mobility.”
